Parquet installation for DIY enthusiasts

The sound of click, click rises from the house.

A natural floor covering made of wood is created from the first to last row. But who installs the finished parquet? In the following guide, we will provide you with an overview that will assist you with the how and what. You will take pleasure in your new parquet floor for years to come as a result.

How do I install parquet?

If you follow the right instructions, you can easily install finished parquet all by yourself. The best way to install your parquet depends on the floorplan of the apartment and the floor. Your specialist dealer will be happy to advise you. In general, there are two ways to install the floor:

1. Floating installation: fast and glueless

You can install parquet yourself with a little skilled craftsmanship: You have probably heard about floating installation in connection with laminate. It is done much the same way with parquet floors. If you want to use the floating installation method to lay click parquet, you can do so without using any glue or adhesives. You click the parquet boards into place and do not glue them to the subfloor. Parquet floors laid by the swimming installation method can be easily removed. You need a folding rule and a saw. The other tools you need will depend on the product, subfloor and room features.

2. Glue-down installation: particularly long lasting

When you use an adhesive, you attach the flooring firmly to the subfloor. The benefit? The wood can move less. You will also create an optimal situation in terms of footfall sound. This is particularly worthwhile in heavily used rooms in commercial areas. Don’t give a thought to solvents: Our HARO flexible glue is low in harmful substances and emissions. This type of installation job is a challenge for DIY enthusiasts. For this reason, we urge you to let a skilled professional handle it. You will then have a result that will keep you smiling for many years to come.

What sort of preparations do I have to perform before installing the parquet?

The boards have been selected and delivered to your home. Let’s get started! No so fast. Do you have a suitable subfloor? Do you have distance spacers for expansion gaps to the wall? As a motivated renovator, you have to prepare the entire room and parquet.

In the first step, the wood has to become acclimated to the room climate: Store the closed packages containing the parquet flooring in the room where it will be installed. Particularly in winter, wooden boards must become acclimated to an installation temperature of about 20 °C (18°C at the very minimum). Please remember that the parquet should not be opened until it is about to be installed.

While your new floor acclimates itself to the environment, you can take a closer look at the room. Key word: Installation direction. This factor strongly influences the optical impact of a room. From which direction does light hit the subfloor? Orientate yourself on the main source of light and install the elements parallel to the angle of incoming light. This hides joints and creates a harmonious look. If you want to accentuate the appearance of the wooden boards, you can also install the parquet transversely.

Our tip:

Are you planning to install the parquet in a small hallway? Ensure that the boards are always laid lengthwise.

You will find detailed information about preparations in the installation instructions. Each package of your new parquet floor includes installation instructions.

What do I have to keep in mind regarding footfall sound insulation?

Step by step to achieve a pleasant forest floor effect: Footfall sound insulation actively reduces room and footfall sound. By using the right installation underlay, you can reduce indoor sound by up to 30 percent (maximum individual level according to the EPLF Impulse Hammer test, in terms of reference floor) and the footfall sound by up to 19 decibels (based on DIN 140-8). This will be a cause for celebration not only by your neighbours, but also by your spinal column and joints.

There are two ways to achieve footfall sound insulation: firmly or loosely.

We use the term “integrated insulation layer” when our Silent Pro insulation layer is glued to the back of the board. We will install it while your floor is being produced so that your home has to undergo just one work process (may be ordered starting at a quantity of 10 m²). A further advantage: The combination of board and insulation also eliminates the possibility of hallow points and air spaces. This improves insulation.

As an alternative, you can install classic loose insulation. You can cut it easily and precisely to achieve the right fit. The cuttings can be placed in domestic waste in an environmentally safe manner

Reduce the indoor sound by up to 30% with suitable footfall sound insulation.

How well does HARO parquet tolerate underfloor heating?

Thanks to state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, our entire range of HARO parquet is suitable for installation on underfloor heating and even underfloor cooling. We urge you to glue down the parquet flooring. This will improve the performance of the heating system and reduce floor movement. The temperature of the heating system causes the wood to move more.

Our qualified staff will be happy to assist you with the installation of parquet on a warm-water underfloor heating system. You will find more information about the topic of installing parquet on underfloor heating here.
