The Six Senses Bhutan: Luxury holiday in the land of happiness

The Six Senses Bhutan isn’t a single hotel. Rather, it’s an exclusive collection of five luxurious lodges spread across different valleys of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Each lodge offers a unique experience deeply rooted in local culture, nature, and spirituality.

The Six Senses Bhutan values sustainability and cultural authenticity. The lodges were built using regional and sustainable materials, the hotel sources much of its own food and offers traditional wellness experiences such as hot stone baths and guided meditation sessions. This philosophy supports Bhutan’s ambition to remain the world’s first carbon-negative country.

The Six Senses Bhutan project was designed by Habita Architects from Thailand, who are known for realising their projects with a deep understanding of culturally influenced architecture, regional materials, and functionality. The traditional Bhutanese house at Six Senses Bhutan is an outstanding example of this sustainable architecture. The building materials consist in wood, stone, and earth – all of which are available in abundance locally and can be obtained sustainably. This lodge’s rammed earth walls provide excellent thermal insulation, good for maintaining a constant indoor temperature.

High-quality, sustainable, and healthy living materials were the focus in the planning of Six Senses. Therefore, being sure to choose the right floor covering was also a crucial factor. For this reason, Habita Architects chose the high-quality HARO PARKETT 4000 Plank 1-Strip 180 4V Oak Markant brushed naturaLin plus Top Connect as the flooring for a total of 2,536 square meters of the luxurious hotel rooms. It was important to them that HARO produces its parquet sustainably and carbon-positive, while guaranteeing the highest quality and durability in line with German standards.

The healthy living HARO parquet was laid by specialist staff at an altitude of 2,650 metres with a fantastic view of the Himalayan mountains. The Six Senses staff were also shown how to care for the floor properly. With its natural oak look, the parquet blends in perfectly with the natural living concept of the lodges. The distinct texture, which emphasises the natural look and feel of the wood, embodies naturalness down to the last detail and creates a link to the resort’s sustainability concept.

Guests praise the resort’s extensive and personalised service, which includes delicious meals, easy arrivals and departures as well as personally tailored tours and excursions. Many travellers report unforgettable experiences, characterised by the combination of luxury, nature, and culture.

Bhutan itself is a fascinating country with a unique philosophy, impressive nature, and deeply rooted spirituality. Bhutan measures its success not solely based on economic metrics, but by the happiness of its citizens. In addition, it is one of the few countries in the world that absorbs more CO₂ than it emits. 70% of the country’s land area is covered by forests, and significant investments are being made in renewable energy (primarily hydropower) to preserve them for the future.

In order to keep tourism and its negative impacts at bay, travel to Bhutan is subject to strict rules. Bhutan pursues a ‘high value, low impact’ tourism. Holidaymakers may only travel with registered providers who guarantee a minimum daily budget. What’s more, efforts to successfully resist the consumer habits commonly found in Western countries have so far been successful. In Bhutan, there isn’t a single McDonald’s or Starbucks branch,  for instance. This conscious renunciation of globalisation as a means to preserve the local culture is part of the country’s unique charm.
