The Six Senses Bhutan: A Luxury Vacation in the Land of Happiness

The Six Senses Bhutan isn’t a single hotel. Rather, it’s an exclusive collection of five luxurious lodges spread across different valleys of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Each lodge offers a unique experience deeply rooted in local culture, nature, and spirituality.

According to its owners, Six Senses Bhutan places great emphasis on sustainability and cultural authenticity. The lodges were built using regional and sustainable materials, the hotel sources much of its own food and offers traditional wellness experiences such as hot stone baths and guided meditation sessions. This philosophy supports Bhutan’s ambition to remain the world’s first carbon-negative country.

The Six Senses Bhutan project is the work of Habita Architects from Thailand, who are renowned for realising their projects with a deep understanding of culturally-informed architecture, regional materials and functionality. The traditional Bhutanese house at Six Senses Bhutan is an outstanding example of this sustainable architecture. The building materials consist of wood, stone and earth – all of which are abundant locally and easy to source. The rammed earth walls of this lodge provide excellent thermal insulation and ensure a constant temperature inside.

High-quality, healthy-living materials were a key focus during the planning of Six Senses. Choosing the right flooring was therefore a key consideration. For this reason, Habita Architects selected the high-quality, oiled HARO PARKETT 4000 Plank 1-Strip 180 4V Oak Markant brushed as the flooring for a total of 2,536 square metres of the luxurious hotel rooms. It was important to them that HARO, with its experience and adherence to German standards, guarantees the highest quality and durability.

HARO ’s health-friendly parquet, which has been awarded the Blue Angel label, was laid by specialist fitters. As part of this process, the Six Senses staff were also shown how to care for the oiled floor correctly. With its natural oak finish, the parquet blends perfectly into the lodges’ natural living concept. The texture, the natural look and feel of the oiled wood, and the flawless finish embody naturalness down to the last detail, thereby creating a connection to the resort’s environmentally conscious concept.

In addition to the architectural and structural features and the exceptional location at an altitude of 2,650 metres, with a fantastic view of the Himalayas, guests praise the resort’s comprehensive and personalised service. Delicious regional meals, easy travel to and from the resort, and personalised guided tours and excursions make the trip an unforgettable experience that harmonises luxury, nature and culture.

Bhutan is a fascinating country with a unique philosophy, impressive natural beauty and deep-rooted spirituality. Bhutan measures the country’s success not only in economic terms, but by the happiness of its citizens. Furthermore, it is one of the few countries in the world that absorbs more CO₂ than it emits. 70 per cent of the country’s land area is covered by forest, and significant investment is being made in renewable energy (primarily hydropower) to ensure this remains the case in the future.

To minimise the negative impact of tourism, there are strict regulations governing holiday travel. Bhutan pursues a strategy of ‘high-value, low-impact’ tourism. Travellers may only book through registered tour operators who guarantee a minimum daily budget. Efforts have also been made, so far successfully, to resist the typical consumerism of Western countries. For instance, there is not a single McDonald’s or Starbucks branch in Bhutan – this conscious rejection of globalisation in order to preserve the culture is one of the country’s special attractions.
