Architects love the challenge of integrating contemporary residential and working concepts into traditional structures. This, too, was the case for a model municipal-development project in the German city of Mainz: Rheinkontor am Zollhafen (Rhine Branch Office at the Customs Port). The firm Holger Meyer Architekten went to work and created the perfect symbiosis between tradition and trendy style.

The inner harbour of the Mainz customs port measures 80,000 square metres and is the heart of the residential and work area based on the principle of “urban living and working directly on the water front”. One of the first spacious buildings that was erected here as a new building is the Rhine River branch office of the real-estate firm LBBW Immobilien. The building has 14,000 square metres of rental space, of which LBBW uses more than two-thirds. In addition to spacious offices, the five-story building is home to a light-flooded company cafeteria and a café.
For leisure time outdoors, the building offers four terraces, including a greened roof terrace. As a way of reminding people about the old office buildings that once stood here, the team of architects decided to erect a façade of perforated clinker bricks with large windows. The floor plans are designed with the work world of tomorrow in mind: Think tanks and meeting points are systematically arranged on all floors to facilitate intense discussions and a high level of creativity in work processes. The underground car park can accommodate more than 180 vehicles and offers a large number of electric charging stations for every type of electromobility.
Elegant HARO parquet flooring was installed in the company cafeteria and in the Board of Management areas. The architects selected HARO “Plank 1-Strip 4V Oak invisible” with striking textures. This bright and friendly parquet floor helps to create a pleasant, radiating light in the rooms throughout the day. The exquisite Plank 1-Strip was used in more than 400 square metres of the building. It lends a touch of cosiness and class to the cafeteria and Board of Management offices. Once again, HARO serves as a defining element in the work world of tomorrow, which will consist of offices that promote creativity and combine a feel-good atmosphere with functionality.
