Maria Alm (Austria) – Each and every storey of the four-star hotel “Hotel Eder – Das Steinerne Meer Hotel” expresses a deep commitment to heritage and the attachment to the “Steinernes Meer”, which means “stone sea” and is the name of an Alpine mountain region in the Austrian Salzburger Land. As is typical for the region, the hotel is situated right between the church and the village inn on Maria Alm’s village square. It was founded in 1961 and lovingly expanded and modernised for the 50th anniversary. The focus was on the softwoods Swiss Pine and Larch as well as reclaimed wood and classical Oak parquet. With its rustic look and appealing knots, HARO Plank 1-Strip Oak Sauvage achieves the perfect balance between modernity on the one hand and a return to the traditional value of the raw material on the other. The high-quality parquet floor thus underpins the philosophy expressed by the new hotel architecture.
The selection of the Oak floor was preceded by a long decision-making process by the hotelier and the contractor. But the result was well worth the effort says owner Mag. Josef Schwaiger, as the wood types Oak, Swiss Pine, reclaimed wood and Larch look perfect together. In addition to its beautiful appearance and its durable surface protected by the bioTec® oil/wax finish, the parquet from Hamberger Flooring, Germany's leading parquet manufacturer, convinced with its high quality, quick installation and PEFC certification. A total of more than 1,000 square metres were installed.
The overall hotel design pays respect to the building's history and its special location amidst the Steinernes Meer mountain range. Clean lines and a contemporary design are combined with the typical Alpine style steeped in local traditions.
Swiss Pine, Oak and reclaimed wood – an exquisite trio
Wood traditionally dominates the architecture in the Alpine regions and, thus, this material is an integral element of the hotel's interior and exterior. For the interior, the focus is on wood and stone materials. Every storey is designed with its own set of wood types. Touched off with Loden fabric, the combinations of Swiss Pine, Oak and reclaimed wood have a cosy yet very modern effect. Hollowed stones are used as washbasins and staghorn knobs as drawer handles. The contractor, Schild Raum & Design from Saalfelden in Austria, designed the interior using vintage patterns and golden picture frames, earthy colours and natural materials, which are optimally enhanced by the classical Oak parquet. On the outside, the ensemble of buildings is marked by a subtle, traditional style. The facade features larchwood balconies and vintage Alpine elements. An impressive hipped roof with larch shingles tops off the hotel on a wooden roof truss.
Situated near the famous “Steinernes Meer” mountain range between Berchtesgaden in Southern Bavaria and Salzburger Land in Austria, the style of the four-star hotel is influenced by Alpine traditions. Not only the view of the “stone sea” has been optimally integrated in the overall concept, but also the location within the village and the layout of the existing buildings: While the hotel entrance is directly on the village's main street, the guesthouse is still accessed from the village square just like decades ago. The guesthouse has been extended and offers modern guest rooms, which have also been fitted with HARO's bestseller Plank 1-Strip Oak Sauvage. The administration offices are located right under the roof in the same building. The building's wing along the village's main street houses a modern cocktail bar, a vintage Austrian inn and an elegant restaurant. A large terrace extends this area to the South. Above, three storeys provide a total of 32 guest rooms while below, the redesigned spa offers a wellness oasis.
